Even as the Morcha’s ultimatum ended on Tuesday, the alliance of Madhes-based parties stopped short of taking any decision on whether to continue or withdraw support to the government.
After a meeting of the Morcha secretariat, which has seven second-ranking leaders, the Madhesi alliance said a meeting of the top leaders on Wednesday would come up with “a concrete decision”.
In its ultimatum served on March 8, the Morcha had warned of withdrawing support to the government “if their demands of putting off polls and amending the constitution are not met”.
When asked about their ultimatum, the second-ranking Morcha leaders said they “need not announce withdrawal of support”. “Nor do we need to inform the Parliament Secretariat about our decision of withdrawing support,” said a Morcha leader, arguing that in the ultimatum itself the Morcha has said “our support to the government will automatically end after the end of the ultimatum”.
“We have been sitting on the opposition bench in Parliament; we don’t need to inform even the Parliament Secretariat [about our decision of withdrawing support],” said Brikhesh Chandra Lal, vice-chair of Tarai Madhes Loktantrik Party.
